“Walk for the Animals” sponsor walks the talk
365 days a year

Bloomington, IN – When the 10th Annual Walk for the Animals fundraiser for Monroe County Humane Association (MCHA) barks down the streets of Bloomington on Sunday, October 2, Canine Companions will once again be signed on as a $1,200+ Diamond Sponsor. But Canine Companion’s commitment to the shelter far exceeds this one-day annual event—since 2004, it has teamed up with MCHA in an effort to make shelter dog adoptions more successful by donating free services.

Canine Companions' owner, Bryan Bailey, is deeply committed to animal welfare. "The shelter is under-funded and understaffed for the needs of this community. It’s not the dog’s fault it’s placed in a shelter and humans need to address their problems compassionately. At Canine Companions, we can offer training, vet care, shelter and other services as a donation to help meet the community’s need," Bailey said.

As a service to the shelter, Bailey and his staff help evaluate dogs to recommend the kind of environment that will ensure the adoption’s greatest opportunity for success. They assess a dog’s adoptability, temperament, genetics, training and behavioral make-up. Each evaluation suggests what type of owner would be most compatible for the particular dog and what size and style of living environment the dog requires.

Bailey, who has a professional background in canine training, and his knowledgeable staff have also worked with shelter dogs to address behavior problems. "We have trained several dogs for free so they would be more likely to be adopted, and, in fact, they were then successfully adopted," Bailey said.

Once adopted, a care program for new pet owners is offered -- two to three evenings per month new owners meet with a Canine Companions veterinarian and a staff member who provide training lessons and house-breaking tips. Because Canine Companions incorporates an on-site Veterinary Hospital, it can also provide essential veterinary services at low or no cost, such as rabies vaccinations.

Canine Companions also offers kennel space free for "overflow" dogs from the shelter. "I couldn’t live with myself knowing a dog didn’t live because it had no place to stay for a couple of weeks until it was adopted," Bailey said.
