The Bloomington-based regional newspaper The Herald-Times recently profiled Canine Companions owner Bryan Bailey for his work as character coach for Bloomington High School South’s football team.
Bailey met South’s head coach Drew Wood in church through mutual acquaintance Steve Conner, a former Chicago Bears
linebacker involved in Sports Outreach International, which combines Christian evangelism with sports coaching in countries around the world. Wood knew he wanted his team to become not just better players but better men. And Bailey was just the man to help!
Bailey's approach emphasizes toughness, teamwork, and tempo on the field, with no talk-back allowed and encouragement given to each player. Honor and respect are emphasized as well in order to create a well-rounded character. Bailey draws on his experiences in the U.S. Navy to balance discipline with a positive outlook.
The team has responded well, with faster workouts, harder drills, and increased commitment. Coach Wood is aiming for the state championship.
Bailey is a perfect fit for the program, according to Wood. “Bryan Bailey is intense and a perfectionist. He’s one of the best things that’s ever happened to me as a coach,” Wood said. “He’s lived a life of amazing stories.”
